Say Hello to Your Cinematic Justice League| Meet the Witches in This New Oz: The Great and Powerful Featurette| George R.R. Martin Working on – Wait for it – A Song of Ice and Fire Prequel
That Justice League news was unexpected, and while it’s still a rumor it seems to be a pretty solid one. Unsurprisingly the team lineup is Supes, Bats, Wondy, Flash, and GL. I’m shocked, WB, shocked. Though in all seriousness, I’m disappointed there’s no Aquaman. Come one, give him a break! He’s proven lately he’s not as lame as everyone always thought.
Even more unexpected, GRRM is writing something that isn’t The Winds of Winter!? What the fuck, George!? This prequel novella sounds awesome ‘cause it’s all about the Targaryen Civil War, known as the Dance of the Dragons, but still, it ain’t The Winds of Winter. Dude, HBO is gonna catch up faster than you think.
I also want to draw you attention to this insane bit of news: J.J. Abrams is directing Star Wars Episode VII. I know! Who would have thought we’d ever live in a world where one man would be in control of both Star Trek and Star Wars!? What’s next, Whedon directing Justice League?
A little while back I mentioned this fantastic book by Kelly Thompson that was on its way to being published through Kickstarter. I had fully intended to update with a link to said Kickstarter but being busy (read: lazy) it never happened.
Good thing they raised the needed funds and then some well before the deadline, no thanks to me. But! You can still contribute funds to the Kickstarter and recieve awesome prizes in addition to your own copy of the book, either digital or in print!

Kelly’s been releasing chapters of this novel weekly on her site, and let me tell ya, it is fantastic. Currently four chapters are posted and I’m eagerly awaiting the next. She’s planning to self publish with funds earned via Kickstarter beginning Monday, June 25th.
If you’re a fan of tough ladies, this book’s for you. I really can’t recommend it enough, and really, when it’s free, what do you have to lose?

Can’t help but look at this new poster of Liam Hemsworth for The Expendables 2 and think, huh, so that’s what Gale will look like come the Mockingjay film.
And, why is he in The Expendables 2?!?
Also, I’ve become a rabid Hunger Games fan after burning through the books last weekend. I wrote about it over on my blog.
I read the Lord of the Rings and stuff, but I really only turned to the George R.R. Martin serial because I knew there was a TV show coming out and I felt like I should know what all the hubbub was about. I was initially very embarrassed to be reading it because it wasn’t a metaphor or an allegory of any kind. You know, like, there’s no question that the Lord of the Rings was about war, the mechanization of England, the industrialization of England, that it was about all these other things. You could get lost in the fact that Tolkien made up all these wackadoo elvish languages. But with George R.R. Martin this is a guy that just loves fantasy and science fiction and was just writing in the form and at first I found this to be a little unseemly.
Of course he’s such an amazing storyteller that I got right into it, and then it basically controlled my life. And I ended up realizing what I don’t think he totally gets credit for, aside from his amazing skills as what they say in the fantasy writing game as a “world builder,” as a guy who creates incredibly thoughtful, living, breathing set of cultures in an invented world, just line by line he’s one of the finest writers that I’ve read. And particularly his sense of how to pace out a scene and surprise you with where the scene goes and what happens in it. Particularly big scenes like a wedding or a feast of some kind. And for a book that’s as much about war as it is, he writes a lot in the salon and in the bedroom. And I think he’s the only person I know who actually writes culinary suspense stories.
There’s so much food writing in those books, which I can only presume is based on at least some research of the weird lampreys and duck thighs that people ate around the time of the War of the Roses, but it brings such life to those books and then the things that happen over meals are sometimes the most important. Huge feastings that are incredibly skillfully paced out in a way that from a writerly point of view I found absolutely astonishing.

It’s a little late for a Christmas gift, but it’s received with great joy nonetheless. George R.R. Martin has released a new excerpt from The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in the sprawling A Song of Ice and Fire series. Not sure if you’re aware of this or not, but this series has received a ridiculous amount of buzz lately. Unless you’ve been living under a rock you know HBO has adapted the first book, A Game of Thrones into an incredibly popular television series, with the second season premiering in April. There’s also a few video games on the way, including an RPG developed with Martin’s input. Which had me wondering, with the all the support he’s given to HBO’s series, time spent developing video games, and even working on a Game of Thrones comic book where will he find the time to finish the damn books…

There’s a rumor a’swirling about the continuation of HBO‘s smash hit adaptation of George R.R. Martin‘s A Song of Ice and Fire series. As I’m guessing you know by now, A Game of Thrones is actually the name of the first novel in the series, not the name for the series itself. But HBO changed it when they named their show, and honestly, I think it works even better. Season two is fast approaching (Get here now, April!!) and fans have started wondering what’s the show’s future? Will book three, A Storm of Swords, which is quite lengthier than the first and second, be cut in to two seasons…
‘Tis the week of sales, and Amazon’s deal on eBooks is unbeatable. Between now and December 3rd you can snag awesome deals on hundred of Kindle eBooks all for under $4. I can honestly guarantee you’d find a book worth a read for only a few bucks.
There’s one standout though, I can’t believe how cheap this is, Breathers: A Zombies’s Lament by S.G. Browne available for $.99! Geeks of Doom alerted me to this deal and I cannot tell you enough how great the book is. It’s a zombie-romantic-comedy, and it fufills those three elements wonderfully.
Breathers tells the story of Andy, a newly risen zombie whose learning how to get back on his feet after death. He faces all sorts of struggles as zombies are treated as no-class citizens. A zombie has no rights, cannot own property, cannot marry, cannot hold a job. They’re little more than pets, but nobody wants one.
Andy’s forced to live in his parent’s basement, attend weekly meetings of Undead Anonymous and endure constantly being shat upon by society because of his undead status. Oh, and he can’t talk either since his mouth was sewn shut before embalming. Everything starts looking up when he meets, Rita, a gorgeous zombie who also attends UA. The love story Brown creates is completely original and heartbreaking. You would probably never think a zombie love scene could be beautiful, you’re wrong.
To top it off, Breathers is hysterical! Andy’s deadpan observations of life a new zombie are so funny and often eye-opening. Zombies are all the rage right now, but this book has such a different take I think it’s must read. In Breathers you’re not concerned about wiping out the zombies, your fueled to campaign for zombie rights.
Seriously, go buy it now, at $.99 I don’t think you can be disappointed. Don’t fret if you don’t own a Kindle, I don’t. Kindle eBooks can be read on one of Amazon’s free reading apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows PC, Mac, Blackberry, and Windows Phone 7.
Also it’s good to note this book has been optioned to become a film with a script by Diablo Cody. She wrote Juno (which I saw, and loved) and Jennifer’s Body (didn’t see, Megan Fox scares me). I’m not sure how she would adapt the story, so to be on the safe side you should read the book first.
